Common Questions and Concerns About Remodeling
Remodeling your home is a big decision. It’s normal to have questions, or even a few fears, before getting started. Many homeowners across the Connecticut shoreline and surrounding communities share these same concerns before beginning a remodeling project. Here are some of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners and how we address them.
How can I avoid expensive mistakes when remodeling my home?
You’re not alone. Most homeowners feel this way, and it’s one of the main reasons we separate design and construction into two distinct phases.
During the design phase, we fully develop your project before construction begins. That means you’ll know:
-
Exactly what the project will look like
-
Exactly what it will cost
-
Exactly what’s included
Our goal is to give you the information you need to feel confident in your decisions before a single wall is opened.
How do you prevent constant change orders during a remodel?
Neither do we.
Our design and preconstruction process is specifically structured to reduce unknowns before construction begins. By the time your project starts, most decisions have already been made and documented.
Of course, we can’t see inside your walls without X-ray vision. Occasionally we uncover something unexpected once construction begins.
The good news: we track our data carefully, and unexpected change orders average just 1.3% of total project cost on our projects, far below the industry average of around 12%.
Change orders on our projects typically happen for only two reasons:
- You decide to change something in the design
- We uncover something hidden inside the home that couldn’t have been known beforehand
And one important promise: we never issue change orders for something we simply forgot to include.
How will my contractor communicate with me during the remodeling process?
You shouldn’t have to.
Communication is one of the biggest frustrations homeowners experience during remodeling, so we built our process around solving it.
Every project has a dedicated project manager, and you receive daily updates about what’s happening on your project within our project management software.
You’ll always know:
-
What was completed today
-
What’s happening tomorrow
-
If any decisions are needed from you
The days of contractors disappearing for weeks at a time are over.
How do you minimize disruption during a home remodeling project?
Remodeling is intrusive, there’s no way around that. But there are ways to minimize disruption.
Some of the steps we take include:
Temporary insulated walls
These separate the construction area from your living space to reduce noise, dust, and debris. An added benefit is that it drastically improves privacy!
Strict jobsite cleanliness
We take this seriously enough that we grade our jobsites every two weeks.
Clear project schedules
You’ll always know what stage the project is in and when major milestones are coming up.
Remodeling may temporarily disrupt your home, but it should never feel chaotic.
How do you prevent common remodeling horror stories?
We hear them too. In fact, we built our entire process to prevent them.
Our goal is to deliver the anti-horror story remodeling experience.
Common frustrations we eliminate:
-
Ballooning project costs: We work on a fixed price agreement and maintain a No Builder-Generated Change Order Policy. If we miss something, we take responsibility — not you.
-
Poor communication: You receive daily project updates and consistent communication.
-
Contractors who don’t show up: Your project schedule is clearly defined and milestones are tracked throughout the build.
-
Quality concerns: Project managers take your project through a detailed quality control checklist at each phase.
- Contractors using your bathroom: Every project receives a temporary restroom on site before work begins!
- Vague scopes of work: Our scopes are extremely detailed, sometimes long enough that clients joke we should release an audiobook version.
Can I see what my remodel will look like before construction begins?
Thanks to modern design technology, you don’t have to guess anymore.
Every project we design includes detailed 3D renderings that show exactly how your space will look before construction begins.
One of our favorite moments is placing the rendering next to the finished project and seeing how closely they match.
How do homeowners choose materials and finishes during a remodel?
That’s completely normal. Between the start of design and the beginning of construction, there can easily be hundreds (sometimes thousands) of decisions.
You won’t be making them alone.
Our interior designers guide you through the process by presenting curated selections that fit your home, your design goals, and your budget.
You can be as involved as you’d like. Some clients love reviewing every detail, while others prefer to trust our team to narrow the options.
Either way, we’ll make sure the process feels manageable.
How do you determine the cost of a remodeling project?
We agree, designing something first and figuring out the cost later doesn’t make sense to us.
That’s why we maintain a running budget throughout the entire design process.
From the very first design concept, we associate costs with the design so we can adjust along the way.
This allows us to:
-
Keep the project aligned with your investment range
-
Value engineer where necessary
-
Sometimes even add features we initially thought might not fit the budget
The result is a design that is beautiful, realistic, and buildable.
What does your remodeling process look like from design through construction?
Many of our clients choose to work with us because we have a clear, structured process.
Every step is defined and shared with you, so you always know where you are in the journey — from the start of design all the way through construction.
We even provide an Expectations Guide that outlines exactly what to expect during each phase.
Remodeling your home is a big undertaking. Having a clear process makes it far less stressful.

- Evaluate your home for design problems and then work on solutions. Start by deciding what you want to attain with a remodel, including which areas of the house require the most work. First and foremost, the fundamentals! If your foundation, roof, windows, plumbing, and heating/air need repair, you must invest in them. Then, prioritize your design update list because updated kitchens and baths provide the best return on investment. We recommend that homeowners prioritize these rooms for remodelling if they need to be more appealing or updated.

Our clients can see the layout to help visualize the final result once the vision is on paper.
Build: Our skilled creative carpenters will bring your plans to life during this stage. While they are working, our designer will continue to meet with you weekly to keep you updated on the progress. They will review what has been completed and what you can expect in the coming week.

- How Much Should I Budget For My Project?expand_more

The budget for your home remodel is strongly determined by the type and scope of the project, as well as the cost of materials. Each project is unique due to the existing structure, project size, and the wants and needs of each client. One of the most efficient ways to create a home renovation budget is to plan out the projects you want to complete and then price them with the assistance of a professional design-build contractor. - Will I have to Move Out?expand_more
-
Though not required for every renovation project, it is usually best to shift during extensive remodels for convenience. Living off-site may help contractors speed up construction because working hours will be less restricted. Demo projects are extremely messy, producing huge amounts of dust and, in some cases, toxins. Renovation areas may be regarded as unusable for extended periods, so a requirement for temporary housing should be factored into project budgets. Working with experienced professionals like Craft Design + Build can help to remove the mystery from home renovation. Contact us to learn more about our flexible design services and home makeovers.
