Crafting Homes
Explore Essex, CT Home Projects with Craft Design + Build
PROJECT: 110 N. MAIN IN ESSEX, CT
Episode 1
Located in the heart of historic Essex, Connecticut, this 1834 Greek Revival home is undergoing a full-scale restoration by Craft Design + Build. Our goal is to return the home to its original architectural integrity while seamlessly incorporating modern conveniences and energy-efficient upgrades.
Over the years, multiple additions altered the structure and flow of the home. We’re carefully reworking the floor plan, removing outdated elements, and introducing features like floor-to-ceiling windows, a vaulted atrium, custom cabinetry, and reproduction millwork that honors the original craftsmanship. Behind the walls, we’re upgrading electrical service, insulation, heating systems, and installing Marvin Elevate windows to improve long-term performance and comfort.
At Craft Design + Build, we specialize in restoring traditional New England homes — blending historic preservation with thoughtful, high-performance design built for the next generation.
Episode 2
In Episode Two of this historic Essex, Connecticut restoration, Craft Design + Build moves from demolition into structural rebuilding. With the home taken down to the foundation in key areas, framing is now underway, reshaping the layout while strengthening the integrity of this 1834 Greek Revival.
As with many historic home renovations, surprises emerged during demolition. An inadequate two-foot foundation required deeper excavation and new four-foot footings to ensure long-term stability. From reframing roof rafters and window openings to reconstructing the rear structure, every step prioritizes structural performance without compromising historic character.
Inside, the new floor plan is taking shape, including a reimagined primary suite, raised ceilings with exposed original beams, a curbless shower, and improved circulation with a new staircase and studio space. With framing progressing and energy-efficient windows up next, this traditional New England home is beginning its transformation, built to last for generations.
Episode 3
In Episode Three of our historic Essex, Connecticut renovation, the transformation becomes visible. With the original 1834 structure fully re-sheathed in ZIP System and new Marvin simulated divided light windows being installed, this Greek Revival home is beginning to reclaim its historic presence, now strengthened for modern performance.
After uncovering inadequate foundation work in earlier phases, the rear wing has been fully removed to allow for new footings and expanded studio space. Exterior trim details, including PVC headers, historic-style sills, and carefully assembled window casings, are designed for long-term durability while preserving traditional New England character.
Inside, plumbing and electrical rough-ins are underway, and thoughtful layout changes, from a light-filled kitchen nook to reconfigured primary and guest baths, continue to blend historic preservation with modern living. With structural shear strength added through proper sheathing and updated building methods, this Essex restoration reflects Craft Design + Build’s commitment to honoring the past while building homes that perform for generations.
